San Francisco Nicho with Milagros

Saint Francis of Assisi, known in Spanish as San Francisco, or affectionately as "San Pancho", was very important in Mexico in former times because of the role of Franciscan monks in the mission system that was set up as part of the colonizations efforts of the Spanish. . Works like this, including the nicho, were often made for small chapels, which people seeking miracles would make pilgrimages to. Often, these pilgrims would later commision works like these for themselves, or they would commission retablos - painted by itinerant folk painters. The use of milagros is very important in these practices. Carved figures like this are often referred to by collectors as "santos", but the more proper word is "bulto".

************

Saint Francis of Assisi is one of the most popular saints of all time.

He is famous for his love of animals, and in this hand carved and hand painted statue, set in a traditionaly Mexican nicho, or portable shrine, he has a happy looking bird pirched and singing on a dish he has in his hands.

Since these are hand made, they all look just a little different one from the other, but they all have the same elements and details.

These pieces are made with recycled wood - Mexican fruit crates - or “rejas” as they are called, by the self-styled "King of Taco Deco", Bryant "Eduardo" Holman.
