La Santísima Muerte
Manuela Porras is a curandera in Ojinaga, CHihuahua, Mexico whose specialty is the cult dedicated to the Santísima Muerte, a particular Mexican “saint” which is banned by the Catholic Church, although many Mexicans insist on believing in her as if she were some sort of variation of Virgin Mary, in the way that, say, the Virgin of Guadalupe is considered to be.
As far as curanderas go, many are considered to be, in fact, “brujas”, or witches, in other words, by a lot of people, and it is difficult to distinguish one from the other at times, because one person might be considered to be a bruja by others but will insist that this is not so, that she is, in fact, a curandera, in spite of what is being said about her. Others might double as both, or pretend to be one while, in fact, actually being the other.
There have even been cases wherein a person would pretend to be a curandera, when she was in fact, a bruja, and would lure people with the promise of removing evil spirits in order to place a hex on them.
Generally speaking, a bruja is employed to place an evil spell on a person, while a curandera is employed to remove it. Manuela removes evil spells that are placed on people, through prayers and intercessions of the Santísima Muerte, who, according to Manuela, is under the protection of Jesus Christ, as is clearly stated in the prayers that are directed to her, which begin with the words “Jesus Christ the conqueror, who on the cross...”, and go on to mention “Immortal God” the apostles, and several well known saints.
