Francisco I. Madero, 2nd from the right, was the original leader of the Mexican Revolution. His forces successfully toppled the regime of Porfirio Diaz, but he was later assassinated by reactionary plotters under the leadership of general Victoria Huerta. This picture was taken in 1910 in the valley of Papigochic in the Sierra Tarahumara, in the western region of Chihuahua state. On the far left is general Jose de la Luz Blanco, and to the far right is the politically active newpaperman Juan Sanchez Azcona.
