Frida Kahlo Day of the Dead Nicho

Click on photo to see larger view and purchase information.

Frida Kahlo for the first time on stage at the fabled Cabaret Mexico, the most famous spot of them all during the Golden Era, when all the greats - Augustín Lara, Jorge Negrete, Toña la Negra - would perform and dazzle the wealthy and the powerful of Mexico City, and get their names in the papers and on the radio. This was the Mexican version of the Apollo Theater. And here is Frida, with her backup orchestra - Los Dos Calacas (The Two Skeletons). I don't know what song she is singing, but it might be her own version of one of Xavier Cugat's hits - you never know! Maybe "Lady in Red", or "Tango de la Rosa". But you can be sure that the audience is thoroughly enthralled. Frida is going to just knock them out! And if Diego is out there in the audience putting the moves on some hussie, you can be sure that after this set is over, Frida is going to go out there and knock HER out!!

This skull is bigger and better looking than any other carved stone skulls that you are going to find in this price range. Go ahead and do a search if you don't believe me. You are not going to find another exactly like this one, either, because I having these made especially for me by an Otomi Indian artisan in a village near Tula, Hidalgo, Mexico, the site of the former capitol of the Toltec Indians. This a made of onyx, and it is from Mexico, and it is a traditional sort of item, connected to the Day of the Dead and the cults of the dead of the MesoAmerican Indians. It has a hole in the top so that is can be used as a candle holder. It comes in four colors - White, Dark Gray, Pink, and Brown.

Mexican curanderos often use skulls as "dwelling places" for the souls of dead martyrs, mostly, who are their spirit guides, such that this is useful as a conjuring device in that sense. However, I have to warn people not to practice conjuring without the proper guidance, as we believe that if you "open the doors to the spirit world" without proper protection, a lot of bad things can happen to you.

Mexican Day of the Dead Skeleton Vase

Click on photo to see larger views.

This Mexican clay vase has a really cool figurine attached to it which based on pre-Columbian archeological finds. I buy these from the Indian woman who makes them, down in Central Mexico. She is keeping alive a family tradition dating back to before the time of Columbus. These items feature figurines known as “calaveras”, or Day of the Dead figures - skeletons - although the skeleton figure dates from Pre Hispanic times, and was a famous Indian motif. The design of these items is probably rooted in the Tolteca culture of the ancient Valley of Mexico so-called "Classic Period". You can use it as a vase, or a pitcher or creamer, or for any ritual that involves the use of skeletons.

Skulls Beads Carved from Real Bone

These are packages of 20 beads, which are an average or 1/2" high and they have 1mm holes drilled top to bottom. I use them to make a lot of interesting jewelry and other items. These come from Tibet where they are carved by Lamanist Buddhist monks practicing ancient Tantric rituals in the confines of their remote monasteries located deep in the Himalaya Mountains.
