Don Martin is part of the hermanidad (brotherhood) of devotees of El Niño Fidencio, the most famous curandero in Mexico, whose spirit, along with other spirits of famous curanderos, conducts operativos in the night, traveling about curing people sick with ailments caused by brujas and hechiceras (witches and sorcerers). It is also assumed that they also cure regular illnesses as well.
El Niño Fidencio and the other deceased curanderos are what is termed poderosos (powerful ones), and they give protection to the curanderos who adhere to their brotherhood, and the spiritual power passed down from God goes through the spirits of the poderosos into curanderos such as Don Martin, who then pass the curative powers into the believers who come to them for cures.
Thus, Don Martin asks that those who come for him for help do these rites, using holy water and prayers offered through El Niño Fidencio and his group of poderosos who accompany in his operativos, so that they, too, will have the protection against evil and the bringing of good fortune which he attempts to impart to believers in his work. |
