H- So, Don Martín, another thing we talked about is that we asked you how, specifically, these people perform acts of witchcraft, and it happens that we talked about a lot of little dolls. Right?
M- Look. It's like there are persons, according to what we have been told, in Tamaulipas who have a school for that.
H- Really?
M- For making mischief.
H- Ahah!
M- They practice while studying. They practice while studying, and they make their first attempts to do evil towards humanity. But then, I mean, people, thanks to God, come to me so that I may cure them. They recover quickly.
H- Yes.
M- They recover quickly, I mean with the will of God, because He is all and everything.
H- Well, yes. You one time said that a woman arrived who had found some of these dolls, and not knowing better, she had touched them, and this thing had affected her somehow.
M- No, it's that the woman had come here from Divisadero - this woman had gone to the store just this side of there. And when she was coming back to her house from the store she found three of them - two female dolls and one male doll, the male doll in the middle and the female dolls at the sides. Then she began to destroy it [the male doll] and it happened that in the heart of the doll there were pins stuck into it. That woman was influenced [or hypnotized], perhaps for that reason her fingers and, partly her hands, were paralyzed, her fingers, such that she had to come to me so that I could cure her. So I told her, look, when you find these things, burn them. Don't keep them, burn them.
She told me, "I took all of the pins and everything off, because there were a lot of them, and I felt really strange, such that I couldn't do any of my household chores."
And she came to be cure three times. And thanks to God she got better. She was cured.
H- And then you told me that a person had come here to ask if you had some of these books they use for...
M- Ah. They had this curandera that lived in Aldama. And my mother was still alive - may she rest in peace! - Doña Justinita Gonzales de Martínez. Well, while she still lived there came this person asking about three books which had three devils painted on each book.
My mother said, "No ma'am, here with us you will not find any kind of books, because it is a special gift which I and my son, also, have," said she. "Look for them in some book store, perhaps you might find them."
And she went away very disillusioned, that woman. She thought that here she would find them. But with us, see for yourself, you will find nothing of that. |
