 Places to Dine

Nothing is quite as tasty, in our opinion, as Mexican Food, and you can't get it any better that what they make right here in Mexico!!

"Antojitos" - traditional Mexican specialties -

Mexico Lindo - Open again under new management in the location which was formerly the Restaurant "La Fogata" on Calle Juarez in Downtown Ojinaga, two doors up from Fausto's Art Gallery and just about a block from the town square. Specialties include Fajitas, Mexican seafood "mariscos", and chile rellenos. Home style torillas, beer, friendly service - see web page!

La Poblana - Favored by the locals for its good service and cheap prices. Good comidas corridas, homestyle cooking, and very reasonable prices. Excellent enchiladas. Somewhat small, and often crowded with local, mostly working class folks. No credit cards.  Located on Calle Juarez right across the street from Fausto's Art Gallery, about a block and a half from the town square. see web page!

Tortas Raúl - Located downtown on Calle Allende, onehalf block East of the town square. Clean, bright setting, good for light eating such as lunch, fresh coffee, no beer or mixed drinks, specialties are sandwiches, called tortas", made with buns that look like hamburger buns plus burritos, tacos and other light fare. No credit cards.

Lobby's OK - The most popular restaurant with Americans, clean, spacious, fair service, quiet, easy listening music, resembles an American restaurant. Fresh coffee, pitchers of lemonade available, beer and mixed drinks, ice cream and dessert specialties (try the cake "pastel de tres leches"). Reasonable prices. The only restaurant in town which currently accepts credit cards. Located on Bulevar Libre Comercio near the corner of Trasvina y Retes.

Los Comales - Ojinaga's most luxurious restaurant, has excellent service, serves steaks and Mexican dishes, menus in English and Spanish, complete line of bar drinks and beer, favorite stop for mariachis and strolling musicians, reasonable prices mostly. Used to take credit cards, but not anymore. Located on Calle Zaragoza across the street  from the Presidencia

Sanborn's - Very popular with the locals, not very much  visited by tourists or people from the American side of the river, except for those most in-the-know people from Presidio, Texas. Somewhat "greasy spoon" type Mexican fare. Good "comidas corridas" - a lunch special featuring Mexican style beef and vegetable soup, "caldo", with a second course, the guisado", which could be anything from green chile stew to enchiladas. Cheap. Beer available. Located on the Chihuahua highway. No credit cards.

Las Cazuelas - Located on a side street just right around the corner from Lobby's OK (one block East of Trasvina y Retes and one half block North of Bulevar Libre Comercio), This is the homiest restaurant in town. Clean, Excellent service, homestyle cooking, family owned and family managed. Great comidas corridas, with your choice of chicken or beef caldo, and usually two or three guisados to choose from. Very reasonable prices.

"Mariscos" - Mexican seafood -

Mariscos Lalo - Small, but well lit and clean, beer available, great seafood soups, shrimp and oyster cocktails, seafood salads, fried black bass. If you order a seafood salad, and you don't want it to be rather heavy, ask them to not put a lot of mayonnaise on it, but to bring you limes to squeeze on it instead. No credit cards. Located on Calle Vicente Guerrero one block west of Trasviña y Retes and two blocks north of Bulevar Libre Comercio. In our opinion, the best mariscos place in Ojinaga. see web page

El Pescador - Located just few blocks from the bridge on Bulevar Libre Comercio, fair food and prices, this was once very popular but has since been eclipsed by Mariscos Lalo and El Bucanero. Beer available, good seafood soups. Shrimp and oyster cocktails, fried black bass. Best item on the menu: the seafood soup "vuelva a la vida" ("come back to life") - reputedly good for hangovers, among other things. No credit cards.

El Bucanero - The latest rage in the region - ever since the rave review it got in the Alpine "Avalanche" by regional tourism savant Jim Glendinning. Campy atmosphere, due to its thatched roof and ultra-rustic furniture. Beer and mixed drinks available, shrimp and oyster cocktails, black bass, English speaking waiters, reasonable prices, great service. Try a mariscada, if you have several people with you - a tray full of all the mariscos specialties. Or go for the best thing on the menu - camarones veracruzanas - shrimp Veracruz style. This consists of shrimp braised and then parboiled in a mix of tomatoes, onions, jalapeno peppers, and green olives. Delicious! On the Camargo highway two blocks south of Bulevar Libre Comercio.
